According to Shannon (2008), the Internet has grown so much in the last two decades that it has allowed for new unmonitored contact between adults and children. There have been a number of studies that have been done on sexual solicitation and this article in particular talks about the concept of sexual grooming in Sweden. The term grooming refers to the online sexual solicitation of youth. Shannon (2008) mentions that usually it’s a process of winning over a victim’s trust first before trying to sexually abuse or exploit the child. Thus, developing a relationship with the victim in order to take advantage of them. Anonymity provides an outlet to communicate with others to create this favorable condition for adults to talk and establish relationships with younger people (Shannon 2008). There are different methods of introducing sexual themes to a child. This manipulation process includes talking dirty or even showing pornographic images or videos to the child. Shannon (2008) says this is all done to familiarize and normalize sexual behavior. This is also done repeatedly over time to remain connected with the child. Data was collected based off of police reports of sexual offenses against individuals under the age of 18 and the perpetrator and the victim had been in contact over the internet before the act was performed (Shannon 2008). In the article, 315 police reports were used and were broken down into four categories. Cases where the perpetrator and victim were in contact online only, both online and offline but no indication of sexual activity, perpetrator knew the victim offline but used the Internet to develop a relationship, or the perpetrator was in contact with the victim online and sexual acts have taken place. Results show that there was a female victim in just over 90% of the cases, over 60% of the victims were between the ages of 11 to 14, almost 90% of the perpetrators were 18 years old or over and about 30% were at least 35 years old (Shannon 2008). The data in this article has confirmed that there are many types of online sexual contact between adults and individuals under the age of 18 in Sweden. The only big limitation is that there is no way to tell to what extent these contacts have gone. This data is only to portray the number of occurrences and reports Swedish police have received.
