Cyber-bullying is one issue related to the anonymity of the internet, internet crime is also another issue. Computers and the internet have become such an integral part in our lives. As technology makes advances in its hardware, software and network resources, it has made it more affordable and available to individuals in all parts of the world. With the availability of technology and the internet, it has lead to cyber crimes becoming a key issue facing today’s society. These cyber crimes pose threats to nations, organizations, and even individuals around the world. So how does anonymity effect the prevalence of cyber crime? According to Hinduja (2008) it could be due to the deindividuation theory. Deindividuation theory as described by Philip Zimbardo, argues that individuals disengage from responsibility for their actions because they no longer have self awareness of their identity or of others. A major factor that influences this loss of self awareness is the anonymity of the situation. The cyber crimes being focused on in this page are piracy and hacking.
